From January 9 to 10, 2024, as a member of the United Nations Environment Programme’s Nitrogen Working Group, we took part in the fifth working meeting. The aim of this meeting was to assess the progress made on resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 of the United Nations Environment Assembly 4 and 5:
- Prepare a roadmap for the further implementation of resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 on “sustainable nitrogen management” in the run-up to the United Nations Environment Assembly.
- Follow up the relevant tasks set out in resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 within an agreed timeframe
- Provide technical and policy recommendations to accelerate action to significantly reduce nitrogen waste globally by 2030 and beyond.
- significantly reduce global nitrogen waste by 2030 and beyond, through improved sustainable nitrogen management ;
- Share information on voluntary national action plans, as appropriate to national circumstances.
- Follow-up on the relevant tasks set out in resolutions 4/14 and 5/2 within an agreed timeframe

- Share information on voluntary national action plans, as appropriate to national circumstances;
- Identify possible modalities for options to improve the coordination of global nitrogen cycle policies at national, regional and global levels, including, among other options, an intergovernmental mechanism for coordinating policies relating to nitrogen as indicated in paragraph (a) of resolution 4/14;
- To provide a forum for the dissemination and communication of information relating to the implementation of UNEA resolutions 4/14 and 4/14.
